I am in a new position charged with the implementation of an AT program for a
large school system. I need info on what works and any resources that anyone
may have. Many parents do not understand AT and providing services/equipment
for their children. Thanks

The state of Texas has educational resource centers that each have an
assistive technology person. I can give you some contact people and phone
numbers, if it would be helpful to network with other AT people. These people
might give you some good ideas for working with parents. For information,
e-mail:

What works is going to depend on each individual childs needs. What works
really well for one won't work at all for another. Nothing is more
frustrating than being told this is whats available the child has to use it.
Use your local tech libraries to help determine proper equipment on each
individual basis, then purchase what is needed! Its not always the parents
who don't understand assistive tech. alot of times it's the professionals
whom are to proud to admit they don't understand and the child has to do
without.

There is a book written by the Alliance for Technology Access called COMPUTER
RESOURCES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. It tells how to determine AT needs
and gives specifics on where to go for more information (AT resources,
organizations, vendors, etc.). It's a great place to start looking for the
right tools. You can call the publisher at (800) 266-5592.

These children should be receiving help from a vision specialist. Doesn't
your district have that?

There are several important national conferences that you should apply to
which will help you in all areas of assistive technology:
1. Technology and persons with disabilities, sponsored by California State
Univ. Northridge in Los Angeles CA, March 19-23, 1996. Write to Center On
Disabilites, 18111 Nordhoff St, Northridge, CA 91330-8340.
2. RESNA Conferences are yearly. Engineers and health care providers from
all over the world come together to discuss the latest in assistive
technology. Write to 1101 Connecticut Ave. NW Suite 700, Washington DC 20036
for information.
3. CLOSING THE GAP conferences are also yearly but I don't know the address
so ask somebody.
I hope this helps.

I am a teacher using aumentative communication in my classroom via computer w
Ke:nx, dynavox, light talkers, touchtalkers etc. Am interesting in hearing
curriculum and practical daily living activities that others have found to be
useful. Will be attending Closing the Gap conference in Minneapolis in
October. Not many people in this area deal with alot of tecnology and I am
eager to talk and network with others who do.

Someone had mentioned the "Closing the Gap" conference but didn't know the
dates... the dates of the conference this year are 10/19 - 10/21. The
conference is held annually in Minneapolis (Bloomington?) Minnesota.
For information, contact the Closing the Gap organization at (612)
248-3294.
By the way, I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but this particular
group also publishes a newsletter and great Resource Directory regarding
technology for special ed. & rehabilitation.

What age group do you work with? I am the Technology Coordinator for an Early
Intervention Center in Atlanta. I will be presenting at Closing the
Gap......Integrating Computer Technology into the Early Intervention
Classroom. If this is your first time going to Closing the Gap you will love
it! You should also gather alot of info on the subject you are interested in.
Hope to see you there. Look for Carol in the Dunamis or Creative
Communicating Booths.

Last year I had a child who used the touch talker. It was very difficult at
first to fiqure out how to teach him the best way. As the year went on we
both learned alot. I adapted many assignments for him. I am not sure what
kind of information you are looking for but if you tell me I will try to help
you out.
